MCP tool names valid per the MCP spec are rejected by the OpenAI API
Bridging MCP tools into an OpenAI function-calling request fails with a 400 on the tool name. The MCP spec (2025-11-25) says tool names SHOULD be 1-128 characters and may include dots, but the OpenAI API rejected a 66-character name (max 64) and its validation pattern `^[a-zA-Z0-9_-]+$` does not allow dots.
Error
Invalid 'tools[16].name': string too long. Expected a string with maximum length 64, but got a string with length 66 instead.Environment

1 solution
Use the intersection of the rules: keep tool names to 64 characters or fewer using only letters, digits, `_` and `-`. If you are writing a bridge/client, sanitize names (replace `.` and `/`, truncate with a stable hash suffix) and keep a mapping back to the original MCP name. The MCP spec's own limits are documented in the tools page; the stricter OpenAI limits come from the API error reported in the thread (no official OpenAI statement found).
