Claude API rejects every request because one MCP tool has an invalid input schema

Requests fail with a 400 naming a tool only by its position (`tools.N`). The API validates every tool schema in a request and rejects the whole request if any one fails: either the schema is not valid JSON Schema draft 2020-12 (`JSON schema is invalid`) or a top-level property name breaks the allowed pattern.

Error

tools.N.custom.input_schema.properties: Property keys should match pattern '^[a-zA-Z0-9_.-]{1,64}$'

Environment

Claude API with MCP tools; Claude Code before v2.1.216 (later versions exclude such tools when feature flags are available)

Fix the schema on the server: top-level property names must be 1-64 characters of ASCII letters, digits, `_`, `.` and `-`, and the schema must validate against draft 2020-12. As a user: update Claude Code (v2.1.216+ excludes failing tools and logs which one), check each server's log for the excluded tool, or disable servers one at a time. Root-level `anyOf`/`oneOf`/`allOf` is also not accepted by the API (Claude Code flattens these).

Environment

Claude Code v2.1.216+ for automatic exclusion
