Large MCP tool results are truncated or trigger output-size warnings in Claude Code
An MCP tool that returns big payloads (schemas, file trees, query results) triggers a warning or gets cut off in Claude Code. Claude Code warns when MCP tool output exceeds 10,000 tokens and limits output to 25,000 tokens by default; successful text results over 50,000 characters are saved to a file and replaced with a reference.

Users can raise the token limit before starting Claude Code:
```bash
export MAX_MCP_OUTPUT_TOKENS=50000
claude
```
Server authors can raise a specific tool's persist-to-disk threshold (up to 500,000 characters) in its `tools/list` entry:
```json
{ "name": "get_schema", "_meta": { "anthropic/maxResultSizeChars": 200000 } }
```
Better still, paginate or filter results so the agent requests only what it needs. The 10,000-token warning threshold itself is fixed.
