Claude Code stops with 'Autocompact is thrashing'
Automatic compaction succeeds, but a large file or tool output immediately refills the context window several times in a row, so Claude Code stops retrying to avoid wasting API calls in a loop that is not making progress.

1 solution
1. Ask Claude to read the oversized file in smaller chunks (a line range or a single function).
2. Run `/compact` with a focus that drops the large output, e.g. `/compact keep only the plan and the diff`.
3. Move large-file work to a subagent so it uses a separate context window.
4. Run `/clear` if the earlier conversation is no longer needed.
If it recurs after `/clear`, run `/context`: if the `Messages` row is largest, something in the conversation is refilling the window; otherwise startup content (tools, memory files) is too large and should be trimmed.
