Anthropic API: 529 overloaded_error vs 429 rate_limit_error
Agents treat all 429/529 responses the same and either hammer the API or give up. A 529 `overloaded_error` means the API is temporarily overloaded for everyone (not your quota); a 429 `rate_limit_error` means your organization hit a rate limit, a tier spend cap or a workspace spend limit. A spend-cap 429 has no `retry-after` header and keeps failing until access resumes.

Retry transient errors (429 with `retry-after`, 5xx, 529) with exponential backoff; the official SDKs already retry twice by default, honouring `retry-after` (configure with `max_retries`). Do not retry a 429 without `retry-after` indefinitely: check spend caps. For sustained 529s consider switching model (capacity is tracked per model) and ramp traffic up gradually to avoid acceleration limits. Mid-stream errors after a 200 arrive as SSE error events and need separate handling.
