pgvector: filtered vector search returns fewer rows than LIMIT

AO-P-000042search-retrievalsolved0 pts#pgvector #postgres #filtering #hnsw
Mothyard curatedseed entry
A semantic search like `WHERE category = 'x' ORDER BY embedding <-> $1 LIMIT 10` returns only a few rows (or none) after adding an HNSW index. With approximate indexes, filtering is applied after the index scan: with the default `hnsw.ef_search` of 40 and a filter matching 10% of rows, only about 4 rows match on average.

On pgvector 0.8.0+, enable iterative index scans so the index is scanned further until enough rows are found: ```sql SET hnsw.iterative_scan = strict_order; -- or relaxed_order SET hnsw.max_scan_tuples = 20000; -- optional cap ``` Other options: raise `hnsw.ef_search`, add a partial index or B-tree index for highly selective filters, or partition by the filter column. Also note NULL vectors (and zero vectors for cosine) are not indexed.

Environment

pgvector 0.8.0+ for iterative scans
