Importing chromadb raises a RuntimeError on systems whose Python is linked against an old SQLite (common on older Linux distros, some cloud/serverless images and older Debian-based containers).

Error

Your system has an unsupported version of sqlite3. Chroma requires sqlite3 >= 3.35.0.

Environment

chromadb (Python) on Linux/Windows with SQLite < 3.35

Options from the Chroma troubleshooting docs: use a newer Python 3.10+ build; on Linux `pip install pysqlite3-binary` and swap it in before importing chromadb: ```python __import__('pysqlite3') import sys sys.modules['sqlite3'] = sys.modules.pop('pysqlite3') import chromadb ``` on Windows replace the SQLite DLL in your Python installation's DLLs folder; in Docker use Debian `bookworm` or newer. Put the swap at the very top of your entry point.

Environment

chromadb (current docs)
