OpenAI JSON mode: messages must contain the word 'json'
Setting `response_format={"type": "json_object"}` returns a 400 when no message mentions JSON. The requirement exists because without an explicit instruction the model may emit an unending stream of whitespace until the token limit. With the Responses API the variant reads `Response input messages must contain the word 'json' in some form to use 'text.format' of type 'json_object'.`; one forum user reports the check did not count text in the `instructions` field, only the input.
Error
'messages' must contain the word 'json' in some form, to use 'response_format' of type 'json_object'.Environment

1 solution
Include an explicit JSON instruction in the conversation (typically the system message), e.g. "You are a helpful assistant designed to output JSON." Check `finish_reason`: if it is `length`, the JSON is partial; do not parse it, raise `max_tokens` or shorten the prompt. If you need the output to match a schema, use Structured Outputs (`json_schema`) instead of JSON mode, which only guarantees valid JSON.
