Agents that force JSON by prefilling the assistant turn (e.g. ending the messages with `{"role": "assistant", "content": "{"}`) get a 400 `invalid_request_error` on newer Claude models. Claude 4.6 and later models do not support prefilling assistant messages.

End the conversation with a user message and use structured outputs (`output_config.format` with a JSON schema) on models that support it, or strict tool use, or system-prompt instructions. Parse tool inputs/outputs with a JSON parser rather than string matching, since escaping can differ between model versions.
